Heavy Rains Break Nearly Half-Century Record in Sialkot

Sialkot witnessed one of its most intense rainfall events in decades, breaking a nearly 50-year record, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Torrential downpours over the past 24 hours inundated several low-lying areas, causing widespread flooding, disrupting transport, and affecting daily life across the industrial city.

Meteorological officials revealed that rainfall levels surpassed historical averages by a significant margin, marking the heaviest spell since the 1970s. The extreme weather caused flash floods in residential neighborhoods, waterlogging on major roads, and partial damage to small bridges and drainage systems. Emergency response teams, including Rescue 1122, were deployed to assist residents stranded in submerged areas.

Local authorities confirmed that the district administration had set up relief camps to provide temporary shelter to affected families, while engineers worked to restore drainage and clear blocked sewerage lines. Despite the challenging conditions, no major casualties were reported, though several injuries occurred due to road accidents and collapsing structures amid the heavy downpour.

Speaking to the media, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz commended rescue teams and assured immediate relief for affected citizens. “The government is fully mobilized to ensure safety, provide relief, and restore normalcy in the shortest possible time,” she said, adding that long-term flood prevention projects will be prioritized to strengthen urban infrastructure.

The record-breaking rainfall has sparked concerns among climate experts, who warn that Pakistan may face increasingly severe weather events due to climate change. Sialkot, known as an industrial hub, has experienced heavier monsoon rains in recent years, with inadequate drainage exacerbating the impact.

Residents have urged authorities to invest in upgraded sewerage systems, protective embankments, and advanced forecasting technology to mitigate risks. Meanwhile, businesses, particularly from the sports goods sector, have reported temporary shutdowns due to water entering factory premises.

As weather conditions stabilize, officials are assessing damage and planning restoration measures. Meteorologists caution that further heavy rains may follow in the coming days, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories.
