Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, has pledged the swift restoration of the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, which sustained damage during the recent floods that swept through Punjab. The announcement came during his visit to the historic religious site, where he reviewed the extent of the damage and directed authorities to expedite rehabilitation efforts.
Speaking to local officials and Sikh community representatives, Field Marshal Munir emphasized the importance of Kartarpur as a symbol of interfaith harmony and cultural heritage. “This sacred site holds immense spiritual value for millions around the world. Its restoration will be carried out on a priority basis, ensuring it regains its original beauty and sanctity,” he stated.
The floods, triggered by record-breaking monsoon rains, caused waterlogging in parts of the gurdwara complex and damaged surrounding infrastructure. Initial reports indicate structural repairs and landscape restoration are required to fully revive the site to its pre-flood condition.
The Kartarpur Corridor, inaugurated in 2019, allows Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the revered shrine without a visa. It stands as one of the most prominent symbols of peace between Pakistan and India, attracting thousands of devotees annually. Authorities believe that swift restoration will not only protect the gurdwara’s historical significance but also ensure uninterrupted religious visits.
In addition to military support, the Punjab government has announced a joint restoration plan in collaboration with heritage experts, engineers, and religious representatives from the Sikh community. Emergency funds have also been allocated to speed up the process.
Community leaders have welcomed Field Marshal Munir’s commitment, calling it a reassuring gesture toward preserving Pakistan’s cultural and religious diversity. “This is not just a site; it’s an emotional connection for Sikhs across the globe. We appreciate the government’s quick response,” said a Sikh representative during the visit.
Authorities are expected to share a comprehensive restoration timeline in the coming days, with work commencing immediately to ensure the gurdwara reopens for pilgrims without long delays.
